A study of older people taking calcium supplements suggests an increased risk of heart attack.
The findings reported in the British Medical Journal indicate that people who take the supplements were 30% more likely to suffer a heart attack. Various recent trials also indicated that taking these supplements did little to prevent bone fractures in older people.
The clinical advice from the National Osteoporosis Society states that the majority of people should obtain sufficient calcium from their daily diet, without resorting to supplements.
The Food Standards Agency recommends adults have 700mg of calcium a day, obtained from dairy products and leafy green vegetables.
This, together with adequate daily vitamin D from exposure to sunshine, should render supplements unnecessary.
So the general medical opinion is, consult your doctor before taking calcium supplements, especially if there is any indication or history of a heart condition.
