Many people ask me the question “How can I lose weight really fast” and my reply isĀ “Bad Idea”
Here are my 10 rules on “The Right Way To Lose Weight”
1. Do Not Crash Diet
Fast dieting is the absolute worst way to lose weight. Sure you will lose weight and the rapid results may impress you, but severely restricting your calorie intake will slow down your metabolism. Then when you try to return to a more normal diet your body will burn calories more slowly and the pounds you lost will return. This is typical yo-yo dieting.
2. Do Not Cut Breakfast
Going without breakfast may seem an easy way to reduce your calorie intake, but it is a big mistake as it leads to early hunger pangs, snacking and over-sized lunches. Eating a substantial breakfast, high in protein and fiber is a great way to lose weight, as snacking is eliminated and a lighter lunch can be taken.
3. Do Not Mistake Low-Fat For Low-Calorie
We are accustomed to eating fat and we need our daily fat, so going low-fat may not be the answer. Many low fat meals are high in calories, as sugar content is increased to provide taste. Always read the label and look for low saturated fat items rather than those advertising their low-fat content.
4. Do Not Drink Your Calories
Be aware of the calories contained in your drinks. Almost everything you drink, with the exception of water, contains calories. Some fancy coffees may have as many as 600 calories. Carbonated drinks are often high in sugar and contain “empty calories” that add to your daily count, but don’t sustain you.
It’s essential to keep your fluid intake up, especially in hot weather, and there is no substitute for water.
5. Do Not Eat Fast Food
Keep fast food to an absolute maximum of once a week. Be aware of the calories in what you order. Don’t “max it” and avoid the temptation to add a side order or milk shake. Fast food is often over sized, high in saturated fat and salt, so choose wisely.
6. Do Not Forget The Exercise
Exercise is a great way to burn calories, so walk, jog, swim or cycle to reduce weight, burn fat, build a little muscle and improve your vascular health.
7. Do Not Cut Out Dairy Products
Some fad diets suggest cutting out dairy products, but that’s a big mistake. Instead, go for low fat milk, yogurt and cheese. The body needs calcium, much of which comes from dairy for most people.
8. Do Not Weigh Yourself Daily
People desperate to lose weight often weigh themselves daily, but that’s a mistake as natural body weight variations provide false information. Set yourself a time and day of the week and stick to it. Recording your weight in a diary each week will provide you with a weight trend to go by.
9. Do Not Seek Unachievable Goals
Weight loss is not a race that is won or lost within a set timescale. You know you can’t run a mile in 3 minutes, so don’t try to lose 10 pounds in a week.
First you need to find your equilibrium – the point at which you stop gaining weight. Once this is achieved then a further reduction of 500 calories a day will see you lose 1 pound in 1 week.
This can be increased with additional exercise.
10. Do Stick To The Plan
Forget the word “dieting” and replace it with “dietary change”. Read labels, read books and educate yourself about food. It is no harder to eat healthy as it is to eat unhealthy foods. People gain weight through lack of food education, great marketing, greed and lack of self control. The only way to lose weight and keep it off is through dietary change.
