I’m often asked about which exercises are best for weight loss and a particular favorite is

“Will running help me lose weight”

Running, jogging and even walking are all great forms of exercise both to burn calories and improve your cardiovascular health. There are some preliminary requirements before you engage in any form of physical activity though.

You need to assess your current state of health, especially if you are obese. I would recommend you have a check up with your family doctor before you start any serious physical workout. Assuming he gives you the go ahead, you need to start slowly and give your body time to adjust to the new demands you are asking of it.

Depending on your current level of fitness and your weight, it may be better to start with walking. One way to do this is by taking the stairs instead of the elevator, at least for a couple of flights and maybe add an extra flight every two or three days until you are comfortable with it.

Jogging is a great way to burn of calories, but once again consider the following:

1. Decide your route before you set off and don’t be too ambitious to start with. If you can find a suitable circuit to jog around, maybe a mile or so, and then when you are comfortable with a 1 mile lap, try doing 2 and so  on. This way you are never very far from home if something goes wrong.

2. If possible, pick a route on soft ground, such as a park or grassland. Pounding hard surfaces can damage your joints, especially if you are carrying excess weight.

3. Buy some decent trainers, capable of absorbing shock, providing good support and that allow your feet to breathe.

4. Take a water bottle with you to keep up your fluid levels.

5. Take your cellphone just in case.

Increasing your physical activity without increasing your calorie intake is a great way of shedding excess weight, especially effective as part of a weight loss diet program.
