Summertime is an ideal time to change your diet for the better. Let’s face it, you were probably going to change it to some degree anyway. Now is the time to really address your  eating habits and make lifelong changes, as opposed to going on some temporary diet just to fit into summer clothes or look good on the beach.

What’s the point of losing weight, only to put it all back on again when you revert to your previous, unhealthy diet a few months later.

There are so many more healthy options when it comes to summer meals. When the warm weather arrives you can easily cut down on your calorie intake by eating more salads and fruit. At the same time you can increase your outdoor activities to burn more body fat.

If you want to add a dressing to your salads, then using an olive oil based dressing is healthier than mayonnaise or salad cream. You may also like to try using a walnut oil dressing, which increases the polyunsaturated content.

If you are using the BBQ, remember than there are many alternatives to meat, like fish and skewered vegetables.

Fresh fruit salads and smoothies are a great way of getting some good vitamins into your family in the summer months. Yogurt, either low-fat fruit varieties, or natural low-fat greek yogurt with flaked or chopped nuts and a teaspoon of honey for sweetness also works well.

Strawberries are a great summer fruit that can be eaten with yogurt, creme-fraiche. Packed with vitamin C (1 cup contains 136 percent of your daily value) plus antioxidants, strawberries make a healthy dessert.

Whatever your particular preferences, summer is a great time for “going lite” and easing up on those calories.
