Eating salads is a great way to improve your diet – but beware the dressings
We’ve seen all the healthy eating guides telling us to eat a minimum of five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, but people tend to find that difficult to do.
One great way to increase your intake is to replace one meal each day with a salad. The only problem with this is it can be boring, or unhealthy if you try to “liven it up” in the wrong way by adding a hunk of full-fat cheese or the wrong dressings.
There are many ways to add some excitement to your salads without undoing the benefits.
- Use a light or fat free salad dressing, or make your own with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
- Mix tinned tuna with a low-fat cheese spread to replace full-fat cheese.
- Add some fresh or dried fruit to your salad.
- Try mixed beans or kidney beans to add taste, texture, fiber and protein.
- Mixing chopped nuts or toasted wholemeal breadcrumbs with your salad adds great taste and crunch.
- Hard boiled eggs are another way to add good protein.
- Oily fish, smoked salmon and shrimp are great accompanied by a nice green salad.

I agree with your post. A nice healthy salad can soon become unhealthy if the wrong dressings are used. I love full-fat cheese, but try to add a few shavings rather than a large chunk.
